RAM Memory Review... Increasing your memory could increase your computer speed

RAM Memory is an important part of your computer overall performance.

RAM memory is a temporary area where your computer stores every document or application you have open on you computer at one time.

You have probably guessed by now that the  larger the documents and applications are that you open, the more memory you need.

If you run large file, graphics, photos, or do video editing and find your system slowing down. This could indicate that you need to add more memory to your system. However, there are other reasons for a system slow down, but insufficient memory would be my first guess.

 RAM Memory Overview

The types of memory systems - there are three types of memory you should be concerned about:

  ●  The system's ROM BIOS ICs - The ROM (Read Only Memory)
is  where your system start-up programs are kept. The ROM is non-volatile. It retains its stored information whether the power is on or off.

The BIOS (basic input/output system) BIOS provides basic information for communicates between the CPU and all of the input devices attached to your system.

  ●  The system's RAM - RAM (Random Access Memory) is a
volatile memory that loses it stored data when power is removed. RAM works directly with the CPU and is fast enough to write to read from memory without any performance problems.

When your system starts running sluggish, this is the RAM you want to increase. Typical recommended RAM for today's systems are 256MB to 512MB.

Many vendors recommended 128MB as the minimum when you plan to  run software such Microsoft Windows XP... Yes the systems will let you load it, but it runs very slow.

  ● The second level cache memory - This is where the computer
copy blocks of often used information to allow faster access time by your PC. This helps to improve the system's performance.

While this RAM has the disadvantage of being volatile (Loses all of the stored information  When power is removed). And the advantage of being high speed.

What are SIMMs and DIMMs Memory?

  ● SIMM Memory Chips - The SIMM (Single Inline Memory Module)
this a small circuit board with 8 chips on it. It fits into a 72-pin slot on your motherboard.

  ● DIMM Memory Chips -The DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) this
a small circuit board with 9 chips on both side.. It fits into a 158-pin slot on your motherboard.

Most of the systems today will require two banks of 72-pin chips. One 72-pin chip is a bank.
